Our Lady of Joy Abbey, which belongs to the Order of Cistercians of
the Strict Observance (Trappists), has been in Hong Kong for more than
60 years. The monastic community lives according to the Benedictine
spirituality. The monks lead an ascetic, simple, silent and cloistered life.
They bear witness to God’s Salvific Love and pray for the world by
chanting, fasting, manual labour and sacrifices.
As soon as one sets foot on the pier, the Stations of the Cross leads the way
uphill. Then crossing the blue Bridge of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, one
is led to the steps which ascend to the Chapel, the house of prayers and
meditation.
The architectural design of the Chapel is simple and interior decoration is
minimal. It aims at guiding all to focus more on God alone: to encounter and
experience Him, to listen to His merciful words, to pray to Him and open up
to His great love in silence.
